  • Informal Physics Education Research (IPER) Collaboration

    All four partners helped convene the initial IPER collaboration, involving University of Colorado Boulder and Michigan State University, which later grew into the Joint Network for Informal Physics Education Research (JNIPER).

  • Quantum Education and Policy Summit

    While at the NSF Q-SEnSE Quantum Leap Challenge Institute, Mike was the PI and lead organizer for this NSF-funded national workshop aimed at facilitating field-wide collaboration in quantum education and workforce development. QEPS is currently transitioning into an annual gathering.

  • White Paper: Informal Education is Essential to Physics. Findings from the 2024 JNIPER Summit

    Brean and Mike helped lead the first-of-its-kind 2024 summit for the Joint Network for Informal Physics Education and Research (JNIPER), the primary goal of which was to produce a white paper outlining the state of public engagement in physics and provide recommendations for centralizing its role in the physics community.

  • Workshop: Designing and Assessing Informal Physics Programs

    Brean and Mike facilitated this half-day workshop at the Summer Meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). The workshop used our own experiences as informal education designers and facilitators, as well as organizational research, to prepare participants to implement public engagement programs at their home institutions.

    Mike designed and facilitated this workshop for the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) in October 2025. The workshop draws on research by ASTC and the Kavli Foundation to give researchers a foundational awareness of relational science communication.
